A tough ending

Dugout2It's an incredibly deflating loss for us. On a personal note, I'd have loved to go back out there and prove myself, redeem myself, and really just show myself that I can pitch well in the ALCS. But now I have to wait for that opportunity for who knows how long? That makes it really tough.

I'm sure in a couple of days I'll have a more positive outlook, and I'll be able to look back at the season and smile. But right now it's just really tough because of the fashion in which we lost. We just laid down, myself included.

People are already talking about where I'm going to play next year, and what's going to be the deciding factor and all this other stuff, but I can't even think about any of that right now. I need to focus on gathering my emotions right now and putting everything in check. Just kind of process everything that's gone on in the past eight months. I'm still thinking about the things I did wrong in Game 1, and how I didn't apply every lesson I've ever learned from every bad game I've had, and I'm still beating myself up over that.

Eventually I'll look back at some highlights. Beating Santana in the Metrodome, highlight of my career. Going in there, with all odds against me and the team -- not just that game but the whole series -- and getting through it on the positive side is definitely a highlight.

Allstar Coming back after probably the worst Opening Day start in history, against the Yankees, and having somewhat of a decent year, that's a highlight, too. After A-Rod's grand slam in the second inning, I was thinking, "Oh man, I might be 2-20 with an 8.00 ERA this year." But I'll remember rebounding from that and having a great month of May, having a **** of a time at the All-Star Game, rubbing elbows with all those great players, that was huge for me.

But beyond all the personal stuff, it's all about the team. We came together as a team in the face of injuries, tough times, a controversial clubhouse atmosphere at times, and a lot of naysayers in the media who were doubting our team. It was nice to come out and be one of the last four teams in the playoffs. There's 26 other teams that are home right now, and guys are fishing or golfing or whatever, and we were still here, playing baseball. That's a huge highlight.

Cap_1 The plane ride home is going to be pretty emotional. That kind of stuff goes on every year, saying goodbye to guys because you know they're not going to be back or might not be back. You go up to those guys and make a real point to express how much you like playing with those guys, how much you love being around them. But this year I might be the guy leaving, so I want to go up to the rest of the guys and tell them how much I appreciate playing with them, their competitive spirit, their love, their determination and their support in the clubhouse. That's going to be emotional, I'm sure.

Finally, I'd just like to thank the people who have been following us and supporting us all this time. If this ends up being my last year here, I just want the fans to know how much I love them, too. That's all I can really say right now. Thanks for everything.

Thanks for all the memories and good luck!

Barry - Sorry that the season didn't end the way you (and all the fans) would have liked. But you guys got further than many had predicted and like you said, you came a long way from opening day. Wherever you play next season, this fan will cheer you on.

I'm proud you guys got this far. Loved watching the team and hope to see you back next year.

Well Barry, I've been posting just about everyday here. A big thank you for letting us in on what is going on with the thoughts and spirit of the team thru such an explosive time. We will miss all of you in the off season! Thank God I've recorded games that I can watch in front of the woodstove on a rainy winter night when I'm wishing I could have a fix of the A's playing ball. Everyone on the team is such a huge part of where you came this year. No one can say it was one or two stars... it was the team all the way. On a personal note... I'm all for Ron Washington for Manager next year. It would be an enormous loss if he went to another team and we lost out on his wisdom, support of the players and player confidence. He would be a huge shot in the arm for next year. Macha has had his chance. I'm not down on him, just think if it was a choice between the two, Washington would win hands down. I hope you will be back with us next year... if not, I wish you the very best of luck! I think next time around and the team is in the post season.. put the ear plugs in when it comes to the media. Be yourselves... you swept the Twins at home for Gods sake! You had the power going with you and somehow it slipped with all the media hype. Trust the force!!!! I've said what I wanted, to all the A's ... you will be in our hearts and minds until spring training. Here's to seeing the bulk of you back next season!!!!!!!!!

No redemtion needed, that's baseball. You know if it was a regular season game on your next start you'd be lights out.Only your next start won't be for 6 months.Try not to dwell to long on it. I'm sure we'll see you at many more ALL-STAR GAMES I'm guessing with your talent and durability you'll be around for another 17 years.Thank you for your years with Oakland it was a blast!

It was definetly a year for you to be proud. I dont know if you ran into a better team, but you ran into a hotter team. Your team does great with limited payroll(compared to lots of other teams with higher payrolls who cant ever sniff the playoffs) I know this because I am a Phillies fan. They could use a guy like you, a true ace.(hint hint) Anyway, congrats on a great season and wherever you play next year I wish you the best. Take care and God bless!

Barry, just wanted to say how much I appreciate you - on and off the field, you're the best. I'm sorry that the series didn't go in the A's favor- but this season was amazing, you played your hearts out. The A's gave it a great run, you and the team made us proud! Thanks for all the great memories, and for being there for the fans- you're always gracious. Hope to see you pitching in green and gold next year. Wherever you go, I'll always be cheering for you.

Barry,
Though today didn't turn out as plan, we all need to think of all the positive things that happened this season. It was full of thrills and excitement. Whether you stay in Oakland or go to another team, I'll contintue suppporting you. Continue being the laid back, down to earth guy you are and I can't wait to see your infamous curveball in the 2007 season. Thank you for a great season. Go A's!!! You are all World Champs to me!

Love,

Patricia

Hey Barry It was a pleasure watching you mature as a pitcher in Oakland. Thanks for the memories and best of luck where ever you may find yourself next year.

Barry,
Thank you for posting. I am sure it was something that was hard for you to do considering the results of today's game. I am disappointed too, because I really wanted to see you be able to go to the World Series. I believe you will someday, but I wanted it to be while you were still with the A's.

I, too, am sad when the year ends for the same reason you are, saying good-bye to teammates who might not return. I know it's different for me, because I have never met any of them (well, I did meet Swisher, he was nice), but it's still sad. I have been watching you all year, driving all my friends crazy "talking about the A's," and cheering you guys on the whole season.

I am so proud of the team! No, you did not make it to the World Series, but you accomplished so much during the year. I am so proud to be an A's fan. Also, if you had to lose, I am just glad it was not to the Yankee's or Angels! Haha!

It was sad reading your last paragraph. I hope you return, but I can also understand why you might like to weigh other options. It's nice that you were willing to blog about this series. Whatever you do, I wish you the best. You know, even though Mulder and Hudson are gone, I still keep an eye out for them. Maybe Mulder's new team will go all the way this year! Wherever you go, you'll be watched to. Just know that even though you might wear a different jersey, I'll always think of you as an A's player.

God bless! It was a wonderful, exciting season! Thank the guys for that!

Thank you Barry, not for just this year and being the man but for being an Oakland Athletic. You have made me from just an Oakland fan to an all out FAN. You have a lot of class and a lot of quirkyness that makes everyone happy you are an A's. If you come back next season, Great. If you don't I want you to know that you always can come back as many times as you want like Ricky Henderson and Reggie Jackson. lol!

Ok, now i'm REALLY gonna cry :'(

I'm trying to tell myself not to feel so bad but I can't help it.

...I really wanted this team to win & not just because i'm a fan but mostly because of the personality of this team. The passion & the heart that each player has shown.

...If ANY team deserved to go & win the World series it's you guys.

...and then , on top of everything else, It's sad to think you may not be back.

I just don't know what else to say right now...Maybe tomorrow, when I don't have this feeling in my stomach i'll be able to put things in a better perspective, but as for now, I think I need a tylenol :/

(((hugs)))

God Bless & Love Ya Much~

~Lisa

Barry,
It's been another amazing year for us A's fans. You guys have so much to be proud of.

I can't even begin to wrap my brain around the fact that you may not be back with Oakland next year. You will be greatly missed. Not only are you an awesome pitcher but a real class act.Keep up your good work with Strike Outs for Troops.Best of luck with all the future holds.

xoxo

Barry,
It made me incredibly sad to see the A's lose today! I screamed and cheered my heart out for every game.

You guys did great this year! I know that a lot of things didn't go the way that the team may have wanted in this ALCS but you played better than so many teams to even make it to the ALCS!

It made me want to cry to watch the last game, thinking that possibly this was the end of your season as an A's player. I hope that isn't the case. I hope with all my heart you come back to play with the A's for many years to come... If, for some sad reason, you decide to leave the A's... DON'T GO TO THE YANKEES even if they offer lots of money! They are an evil team! Well, not really, but I can't stand them... If you leave, maybe you could play for an NL league like the Braves. But whatever you do, I will always be a fan of you!

Anyway, my heart goes out to the whole A's team. I hope that you can get it off of your mind soon and have an enjoyable off season!

Love and Prayers,

Eleanor

Thanks for the great year, Barry. And thanks for reminding me of your amazing start against the Twins and Santana. We as fans really enjoyed watching this A's team win the division and then sweep the ALDS.

Hi Barry,
Haven't we all relished the experience of having you on our team:) Perhaps, by some miracle, you'll find your way back to Oakland some day. Until then, see you around town and at next year's All Star Game right here in SF!

P.S.

Promise to wear my Zito jersey to any game you pitch in Oakland or SF...also, my roommate and I are issuing you a key to our place so that you can come over and surf when you want (we live at the beach).

Ah Honey I know your going to hear this a lot but you guys gave it all and there is nothing you cant do about it now. Just look back an remember the good times with the team and never forget you guys did everything possible to win. I really hope you are reading this because I personally want to thank you for the great memories you gave us. Also if your ever in Chicago and want to see the city just email me i'll be happy to show you around. :-) Finally Barry I want to say how much I respect you for the way you play the game. You give 100% to all your games and that is good to see. Well Barry I cant wait to see what happens next season. Have a great off season with LUV
~*~CRYSTAL~*~

It would have been great to see the A's move on, but all of you have provided an *amazing* post-season to watch. Sweeping for the ALDS was a huge thing; it was a great year for you as well.
So don't beat yourself up for anything, you really shouldn't. Look how much your fans praise and love you. We are all truly proud of you.

We'll see you in '07, and continue to support you, no matter what uniform you may be in.

And Barry, thank YOU for everything. =)

Hey Barry, I've really enjoyed reading your blog. I'm sorry the A's weren't able to make it to the big show, but I'm sure you've heard it's the journey not the destination. ;)

Like you said in your blog, you have a lot of great memories to take with you after this season. And isn't that what life's all about? Friendship, doing something that you love, getting better at your craft, being challenged etc...? I know it's painful now, but I think you and the A's have a lot to be proud of.

I'm a Padres fan (with the A's being my other favorite team), but I've been following your career since I found out you follow Science of Mind teachings. I thought that was really cool, as I don't meet that many people who have heard of that particular philosophy (especially ones in the public eye). Plus, I used to live by Randy Jones house, but that's just a weird, random coincidence. :P

Anyways, best of luck to you wherever you end up next season! Have a great offseason! Take care!

Z,
The Post Season means the best of the best. You and the Oakland Athletics made it to the Final Four...WOW!!! What a triumph for all in the organization. Z, I hope you follow your heart and do what you need to do as far as where you sign. I have learned from baseball that change happens, and positives often occur as a result of this change, meaning trade/free agency/whatever. But...I also know people are where they feel they need to be, and I'm hoping you think of Oakland first. Have a terrific off-season. Be well, breath softly.

Man Z, you're an awesome writer . . . you ought to write a book. Thanks for an incredible season - you don't know how big a monkey you knocked off the back of A's fans when you knocked off the Twins in the ALDS. Unfortunately, you guys ran into a freight train that's stoppin' for no one - you may need to give Mark M. a pep talk over there in St. Louis if the Cards get to the WS. Anyway, thanks again for a memorable season!

Look at the bright side - you still have child bearing hips.

Barry--

You're a real class act in the game, and as an avid A's fan, I deeply appreciate the positive impact you've had on the young(er) pitchers and the leadership you've shown in the clubhouse. Although the ALCS didn't turn out like we'd hoped, we can be extremely proud of the 2006 Oakland Athletics for making it this far, amid the adversity this year. Best wishes to you this offseason and I'll always remember you coming up big so many times throughout your career here. Thanks for giving us this insight into your thoughts throughout the playoffs.

The team won't be the same without you. Being an A's fan can be so bitter sweet.
Best wishes and warmest regards to you.

It will be hard not seeing you at the Coliseum as an Athletic if you leave and watching an A's Game where you arent part of the rotation is going to be tough for me to watch.

Thanks dude 4 all the memories. You've been my favorite pitcher since 2000 no joke. I was histatic when you won the Cy Young in 02, and I was at the Colloseum on Opening Night 03 when you received the award. I never gave up on you amongst the people I knew in 04 when you had a tough year. I wish you all the luck in your future and keep it real man. You had a great year man. Thanks for the increadible entertainment over the years.

I'm not gonna lie...tonight was pretty rough. It ***** that we lost but overall we need to be happy we made it this far and we did have an amazing year overall. This might sound crazy but I was even more sad knowing there is a good chance that Zito and who knows who else will not be with us next year. I have been an A's fan my whole life, gone to spring training and feel like the A's are apart of my family, but this years team was so different. There was a special bond I think all the fans felt for this team. I am already excited for next season. I hope Zito will be with us but if not Zeet, know you will always been loved by the oakland fans, and you contributed to this team a lot. Hold your head high and thanks for taking time to write this to us. Lets Go OAKLAND!!

Thank YOU Barry for all that you've done. I didn't even watch baseball until I saw you on the show "Teammates" and that's when I became a fan of yours, as well as the game. I wish you the best of luck next year. I'll always be a fan of yours and I can't wait to see what'll happen in this next stage of your career.

Barry---

I know it's a disappointing loss and I understand the pain. But when you get your emotions into control and your life back into motion, I hope you look back on the season and smile, for what a season it was. I'm so proud of you guys for getting as far as you did, for surviving so long, for winning so much when everyone said you should be losing.

I had a chance to meet you guys this year, finally, when you came to Colorado in June. I don't know if you'd remember me (I highly doubt it!) but I asked you about the effects of high altitude and if you noticed it at all. I gave Swisher a card that said "Shoot for the moon --- even if you miss, you'll land among the stars!" and a message for you all from me inside, but I don't know if he read it or not. I don't think it really matters, just that he had it. I was really impressed with all of you and your approachability - no snobby players at all. I really, really enjoyed watching you play and getting a chance to talk to you.

Like I said, I know you're disappointed, but Barry, you had a season to remember and I hope you do. I really hope you remain with the A's, but if you don't, I will still always think of you in the proud green and gold.

I have often told you to take my luck and positive energy, and I'll say it again, because you need it now for the end of the season and saying goodbye. Take it for the offseason and use it for spring training. I hope it does you well.

Love,

Gillian

thanks for a great season! good luck wherever you end up next year Barry.

Barry,
Thanks for all the inside info and thoughts durring this great post season run. Sweeping the Twins was great to finaly get over the ALDS hump. It was very hard to watch it end like it did today. Although down 3-0 comming in to today's game, I had a strong feeling of history being made. No doubt it was still great to watch. It would be amazing to see you back with the A's next year, as you have done so much for the team over the years. No matter what happens, you have a life long fan in me... and I'm sure every A's fan can say the same. Have a good off season and thanks again for all the memories. If you end up somewhere else (which we should do anything to make that not happen) I will see you in S.F. for the All-star game. Maybe you will end up back in Oakland down the road if you have to leave now. Thanks for being a MLB player that people can really look up to. God bless and good luck to you, Barry.

Daniel

Hey Barry. It's been a rough series and all of you worked really hard to get to the point were you guys were at. And for that you guys should reflect and praise each other even though its been tough. We're all not perfect and if we were the world would be seriously messed up...But anyways I enjoyed reading your blog you should write more of these frequently. They're fun..lol Well were ever you go next year good luck. But it would be cool if you came here in boston. (Please don't go to the Yankees) But im not going to say any more. It's been fun.
peace and luv...

Hey Barry! I don't know if you actually read these, or if we're just writing them to each other, butI want to say a few things from my heart, in hopes of the possiblity that you may see this. First I want to comment on your status with the A's. I know baseball has become more of a business, then game, which is completely sad. But us A's fan have seen every good player we have, come and go. As soon as they get good, we can't afford them, so let's get rid of them for players who are good, but don't match up to what just left. You have found your way into the hearts of all A's fans and you are the ace of the staff. Someone, who shows his appreciation to the fans. We need you here in Oakland!!!! Not just for your pitching (although that too), but because of what you mean to all of us here. Who cares about being the highest paid, you're still getting paid an insane amount of money to play a sport that you love. I have to pay to play softball, but that doesn't stop me.
My second comment is on the season. I've been with the team for 14 years, through the good, the bad, and the ugly. Even when I've been in college in S. CA for the last 8 years, I came to every game in Anaheim and got threatened, peanuts thrown at me, etc for cheering for you guys. I went home crying after I spent the entire weekend hoping to watch you clinch vs. Anaheim, but washed it away when I was there to watch you win the ALDS. But, watching you guys in the ALCS, it was like none of you really cared. You could see it on your faces. The smiles were gone, the excitment vanished...it was like you guys felt like you were overmatched. The difference in this series is that Detroit wanted it more then you guys. Pitching ******, defense ******, hitting ******. What we saw in the ALDS, wasn't seen in the ALCS. As a die hard fan, I believe in the A's, but I also believe that the team will never reach their highest potential, until they believe it themselves and what they could do. If everyone pitched as they capable of, everyone hit at their career numbers, and the same players that are hurt all year, every year find a way to stay healthy....we have ourselves a world series title. It breaks my heart to see the team just give up....we never did!!!!!

I wish you the best in your journies, and I hope to see you back in an A's uniform for several more years! Cheers!

God Bless,

Sandi

Barry,
i just want to let you know how much Oakland loves you, and how unbelievable sad it will be next year if you dont come back. Chavez will be the last remaining player of those wonderful 2001 A's.

You played a great season though and no one can hold anything against you because you helped the A's finally pass on to the ALCS. Thank You soooo much for keeping us updated during the playoffs, because you didnt have to, but you did it so thank you very much. Another thing, please Barry if you could try and stay in Oakland like Chavez did that would be amazing! i know those millions of $ are hard to resist, but please dont go to NY!!!!! Once again Oakland loves you, thank you for bringing so much to the game and thank you for always being a fantastic person to your fans, every time i saw you, you always had a smile on your face and you were always nice to the fans.

-Concepcion Solis

Barry Zito, you guys had an outstanding year. Please hold your heads up high. We really did have our chances this series, but the Tigers were no joke. They've got it right now. It looks like it's their turn. We love you Barry and we definitely respect you. I also miss Hudson and Mulder... Who knows maybe you'll end up with on of them again. You will be sorely missed. Your not even gone, but we miss you already. Remember the A's!!!! Go Barry!!! Go A's!!!!!!

I was sort of numb over the outcome of the series until I read this. Thank you very much, Barry Zito, for making me cry (don't feel bad about that; it was bound to happen sometime tonight).

Be proud of the effort you put forth all year. This was the first season I actually followed baseball from Spring Training all the way through, and I was surprised to find other A's fans in the Tampa area who were cheering just as loud and as hard as I did. I'm sure Monday will bring hugs and tears at work (even from the men).

Probably the best time I had watching you guys all year was when you were playing out here against the Devil Rays in September. I finally got to see you pitch. I got to meet a couple of your teammates (and managed to give Swisher a hard time for getting that grand slam when I was stuck at work and couldn't see it). I remember exchanging frantic text messages with a friend sitting in another section when Street walked by and I could swear I saw him glowing. Probably the best part of the day was asking the Devil Rays fan next to me to let me concentrate on watching the game; you were actually pitching right then. I was trying to watch you work and he kept asking me questions about the local boys and I had to explain as nicely as I could that I only visited the Trop a couple of times a year at most. He seemed put out, but I didn't care because I got to see my team win that afternoon.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart (the one that, until 2006, only really had room for hockey), for this year. It was a **** of a ride and I'll be spending my winter in the metaphorical line to go again.

On a side note, I'm deeply grateful to you for starting Strikeouts for Troops. My brother's over in Afghanistan right now and it means a lot to me to know that you guys are thinking of people like him. It shows remarkable class and if anyone ever accuses you otherwise, feel free to quote me on it.

Much love and peace to you and the guys, and thank you again. Consider yourself the proud owner of a fan for life.

Barry- Thanks to you and all the guys on the team for the great season, it's too bad it didn't turn out differently. I know I speak for all A's fans when I say we want to see you in the green and gold next year. I hope that the suits can work it all out to make it happen. If you're not in Oakland next year, I'll always respect you and follow your career for the incredible athlete that you are and the quality guy you are off the field.
Best regards,

Cam

Thank you Barry for taking the time to write this blog on MLB.com....you've done an outstanding job, and I loved reading it! This series wasn't how any of us thought it would go, but it happens...the season was not a failure though...it was a GREAT year! It saddens me just thinking of you having to go, but at the same time, I think you've earned the chance of a lifetime...and as a fan of Barry Zito, I'm happy for you...you will find out just what everyone thinks you should be paid and how many teams want you! If it were possible for you to stay in Oakland, I know you would...but we know that's an option that probably isn't a possibility. Wherever you pitch and whoever you play for, I wish nothing but the best for you and your career. Thanks Barry for all the great years...hope there's many more to come...

I have been a loyal A's fan for years. We even go to Spring Training to get the season started out right. I can't imagine the A's without you! The team seems to be more like family then just teammates. Is there anyway you can stay with the team? I think of Michael Jordan giving up a bigger salary just to remain on the Bulls. Sometimes staying with and helping out "family" is the most important thing. We love you, Barry, and wish you could stay an A!

Barry - thank you for doing so much for this organization... all I really have to say is that I hope you can do what so many players in the past haven't been able to do: resist the temptation of money from clubs with a higher payroll *cough* Yankees. The fans would love you back and I know you are the type of person who would be able to see that you could take the same payout as your 2006 salary and live very comfortably, while staying with a team with such a great collegiate-esque atmosphere. Please stick around Barry, you've been my hero since you started pitching for the A's when I was 12.

You gave the A's a good season Barry and I thank you. You will be missed and I know that I personally will follow your career no matter where you end up, you have an amazing Curveball(when you get an umpire that knows what a Curve actually looks like ;) LoL. Good luck on the rest of your career and thank you for giving it your all.

Barry We Are Proud Of You Guys For Coming This Far We Will Always Have Lots Of Love And Support For You Guys We Are All In This Together You Guys Aren't Alone This Has Been An Awsome Season With Lots Of Fond Memories Barry This Goes To You No Matter What Happens If You Do Leave Us Always Remember Just How Much You Meant To Us How Much All Your Fans Love You It Will Be Really Hard For All Of Us To See You Go You Will Always Be In Our Hearts Love Ya Lots Barry!!!

B.T.W. Now that the season is over for us, is it ok to cheer for the Raiders now? I'm a big time A's fan and a big time Raider fan, but as "BAD" as the Raiders are, I think I'll just cheer for them to go 0-16!!! That ought to teach em!! @!*@$! Raiders!
Just thought I would lighten the mood and remind us Oakland fans how nice it is to "JUST WIN BABY" oh unless your the Raiders!! 0-16 !!!! Now that's what I'm talking about!!! Go A's!!! Don't go Raiders!!! (This year only please)

Be old school, Barry, and stay here. You can make money all sorts of ways through investments, especially with the wad you're surely sitting on right now. Just stay in Oakland. No city's gonna love you like we do, and this team, especially with you in the rotation, has EXCELLENT chances next year. You all have gotten over one hump and are now even more bitter about losing in the ALCS.
So please, Barry, stay, invest and win while playing for the Mighty A's.

If not, thanks for the memories. You're a class act and a **** of a pitcher. I'll always be a Zito fan.

Thanks Barry for such a terrific season. It makes me so proud to support a franchise with the carefree attitude you and the team represent. I love reading about the antics of the team and you are its poster boy.

Good luck wherever you end up(hopefully with the A's) and i too will be lifelong barry zito fan, even if it isnt in the green and gold.

The biggest A's fan in Australia, Tim

Hey,
I am amazed at how many times you guys loaded up your offense, and almost scored. You all did better than playoffs past. Maybe you should a stick around bit longer, do a little team organization, and you all will get there next year. The Tigers were not better, just hungrier. The A's days will come....sooner than later-as soon as they realize and execute their immense talent! I know it! I am not even living in Oakland anymore (stuck up in Hockey crazed Alaska) but the A's will always be my favorite team. Thanks Barry for your leadership!!

You will always be an Oakland A in all of our hearts Barry. Don't let Chavy be the only A's veteran! Us A's fans can't take another heart break. But whatever happens, you know we will support you and you will always get a standing-o at the coliseum (except if you go to New York...j/k). Play it for the love Barry. Not the money.

Hey Barry,
You've been amazing this year. Taking the role as leader of the group and guiding us to the playoffs. Sure you had one bad start, Opening Day, but you bounced back and performed spectacularly throughout this season. I hope Billy does some crazy thing and resigns you somehow. I, as well as others, will truely miss you. I'm super goina miss seeing that wicked curveball of yours personally.

Also, tell Huston to keep his head up. You're his big bro and he needs to know we still support him.

Hey Barry,

You guys have had an incredible year. I had a lot of fun following you guys. All of you guys should be proud of this entire year. You guys fought hard, and gave it everything you had.

I am still hoping that you can stay in Oakland, but where ever you end up playing, you'll still be my favorite player.

Thanks Barry.

All of You, Thank You.

-gar

ohh god zito. i'm crying so hard right now. you guys were awesome this season and made me incredibly proud. that said....I WOULD GIVE ANYTHING....ANYTHING.... for you to stick with us and not leave. i am fully aware that you need the least amount of pressure put on you right now, but let me tell you about 75% of the reason i am crying myself to sleep right now is because i may never see you pitch in an a's uniform again. i love you all, and to see one of you leave, god, especially YOU zito--who i cried and was speechless after you signed my first a's hat, would depress me to death.
again, this season was soooo great, and i love you all so much.

love,

veronica<3

I saved the Zito/Santana game on my tivo. Classic Z.
Thanks for the eloquent blogs. Now it's time for you to get some San O or Little Dume. Or C Street in Ventura. A nice point break can be spirtually fabulous. If I had your budget, I would go to Costa Rica. That's my prescription for the post-playoff blues.

Thanks for a great summer Barry, to you and the rest of the team. This was a fun season, giving these great fans another opportunity to watch playoff ball, that Game 3 of the ALDS was unbelievable, and your performance beating Santana was heroic. You are a true gamer man, I know if you had another shot at Detroit you would have pitched the game of your life. All i can hope for as that you get that chance as an Oakland Athletic next year. I have the most respect for you and would love to see you back in Green n Gold!

Mr. Zito,

As a diehard, thanks for the last seven seasons. Its been pretty **** fun! As a guy that every off season starts to hate the game of baseball simply because of the economics of it all, here's a challenge for you. If you truly do love playing here and would like to be a part of future runs at a title, then just stay. It is entirely up to you. Personally, I work **** hard, and I have never earned in a year what most major leaguers make in a week. So its pretty aggravating when I hear things like "15 million wont be enough to sign Zito". I will never in my life be faced with the decisions you will be faced with this winter, so I cannot honestly say what I would or would not do, but it would be extremely refreshing to see someone with your talent simply say... "10 million IS enough money" I am 99 percent sure that you will end up as a yankee or an angel or a dodger or a red sock; some massive market that will give you ridiculous money and for that, congratulations, but it does make it harder and harder for me, the average fan, to shell out an extra $5 per seat and an extra $5 to park and an extra $2 per hot dog and beer, (not to mention that I live in Las Vegas and going to a game costs me a round trip airline ticket as well) just so you guys can have "enough". I am sorry for ranting, I truly am, I am just saddened by the end of the season. For now I am faced with another long off season of contract talks and losing big name free agents and idiot owners giving huge deals to guys with career .500 records and era's in the sixes. And of course the hiking of prices to pay for it all. Still, every April, I try my best to get right back into the game I love so much and forget all the b.s. ,and I will. Baseball is that great a game. But the next five months will be just as aggonizing and annoying as it is every winter for a diehard A's fan. I am simply hoping for a change. So if your time in Oakland is through, then best of luck to you where ever you end up. You will always have a fan in me, except when you pitch against the A's.

170 days until opening day.

Barry Zito...
It has been such a pleasure watching you pitch these last 6 or so years in Oakland. I grew up going to A's games with my father, whose father was an Oakland fan back in Phillie, so we really bleed Green & Gold, BoSox or Yank style. Generations. And a pitcher like you, as my dad always says, only comes around once a generation. I live in Lalaland now, but I was at the final game of the year at Anaheim, drove up the 5 to see y'all clinch Game 3 of the ALDS, and southwested up to Game 1 and 2 of the ALCS. And I know you know this, but baseball is a game of inches. And for whatever the reasons, the inches fell on the Tigers side this time. They were scared of us--they knew it was a toss up--and maybe it was just meant to be there year. But you most hold your head high. Without you, we would have never ever been able to be in the postseason, and I'm still hoping for some miracle that you'll stay in Oaktown. Against all financial odds, stay and finish what you started.

Thanks for the memories, and know that you have a fan--who has taken BART from his house in Berkeley down to the Colisuem for the past decade or so--and whose fondest memories are lazy summer afternoons, watching your curve break from 12 to 6. Keep rockin that mound!

peace,

jakE

Hi Barry,
It's been a lot of fun following this team, not just because you guys were winning but because of all the loose and fun personalities on the team. Thank you for all the hard work and dedication you've put into pitching for the A's, and even if you leave, it's cool to know your influence will still be felt in the organization with the young pitchers that you've mentored these last few years. Good luck where ever you end up next year, though I really hope it's Oakland because I'll definitely miss you if you leave. (Don't go, Barry, please don't go!)

Wendy

Barry,
The A's had a great year this year. And you know what, you helped them get to the ALCS, something that previous teams failed at. Now, even if you are going to go to another team, you've gave the rest of the A's the confidence that they can make it that one step further. Goodbyes are always the hardest, but at least you can leave having accomplished something. Like you said, you beat Johan in the Metrodome, and swept the Twins. That's big. Safe travels (to Boston?) but anywhere that you go, i'll still be rooting for you (except the Yankees, that's no good).

later gator,

Samantha

Barry-
Thanks to you and all the guys for a great season! Give Huston a pat on the back and let him know he did well--don't let him dwell on that last pitch. Hope to see you in green and gold next year but regardless I know you'll do well wherever you go. Best of luck!

Kathy

Whether you stay in Oakland or go somewhere else, I'll always be supporting you, Barry!

And your curveball is absolutely disgusting.

Barry- thanks for being such a great team leader for the a's all of these years. It's been enjoyable watching you develop as a great pitcher. Especially after the A's traded Mulder and Hudson, I think that you really proved your ability to be able to be a positive influence on the players around you. I'm sure whatever happens in the free agency market, you will be able to make the right decision. I hope that you are able to remember the good memories from this year [lots of great pitchers have trouble with the Yankees sometimes], while you use the difficult times to improve as a pitcher and a person. Good luck with everything and have a safe off-season!

you are a great pitcher and had a great year and should not look back on the season with any dissapointment

I understand those beep!! Tigers won but ur a great pitcher. hopefully u'll cheer the mets on . but seriously ur awesome . well isn't that why they chose u for the postseason? talk later

Daniel^^

Barry,

Yes the ending was rough, but the ride was ABSOLUTELY STELLAR. What a great year it has been! I have been an A's fan for 25+ years after growing up in the Pittsburgh area where I lived and died with the Pirates. There we had the Series of '71,Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski and lots of wonderful memories after years of rough seasons. The A's will do it again and the fans would love to have you stay and be a part of it when they do....we both know that some intangible things are more important than free agent salaries.

All the best no matter where you end up in the next stage of your fantastic career. Thanks for the memories and know that you will ALWAYS be an Oakland A.

Deborah

Pleasanton

Thank you for such a FANTASTIC season! I enjoyed it so much, even though this ending isn't exactly what I envisioned for all of you. But the season was great and you all should be proud of yourselves... I very much hope that you come back to us next year. It will just break my heart to see you in another uniform. But no matter where you end up, I will still keep an eye on you. You will do great things, just as you have already done... Have a great off season and once again, THANK YOU for everything.

Valerie, Disco Bay

Barry:

It's amazing how the A's are in it every year. Detroit is just the latest buzzsaw! It seems like the last five years there is one team that just blasts through the playoffs! How about signing with the Yanks and makin' it happen for them next year :>)

Barry,

Thank you. I hope that where ever you end up after this winter makes you happy and you have success.

<3 Katie

i read the blog and i would lie if i said i didnt get misty. i have been an A's fan since i was born in 77 and you were my favorite A of all time. where ever you end up i am going to root for you like i do now lol unless it against the green and gold. keep smiling
brian

Barry, you're the best and I'll always be a huge fan, but whoever you do sign with this winter, please, please DON'T SIGN WITH THE YANKEES!

-Mark in Madison WI

Barry, as a fan I'm proud of you and proud of the whole team. You gave us all so much pleasure this season. I'll never forget being in the stands for Game 3 of the ALDS...that was so special!

I'd love to see you in the green and gold next year, but I understand it's a business. So I wish you all the best regardless of where your career takes you.

I read your blog and reading the last entry made me cry. I'm going to miss seeing you in green and gold, but I know that you are doing what you feel in your heart is right.
I know that you will acheive your goals wherever you go, and I will ALWAYS be a Barry Zito fan.

Good Luck in whatever you do and wherever you go!

~Dana~

Barry,

Why can't you just stay?

Why is it always have to be about the money, We've lost so may good players because of the money, your my favorite player and everyone who posts comments here, it's really going to hurt if we loose another player to the money.

But it just business right...

Your fan Danny.

Barry,
I'm with everyone else when I say that I would love to see you in green and gold next season. I can't say I'll be able to switch my team loyalty, but no matter where you end up, I'll always be a huge Zito fan. You pitched the very first A's game I ever saw, and ever since, I have followed the A's.

Thank you for all the memories, for always giving it your all, and for helping to make this team special. Whatever team gets you is lucky, good luck!

-Tiffany

told you you would get sweeped.that was a great game though, tough loss. GO TIGERS!
-Andrew

Barry,
Clearly it's easier to have the right idea about attitude than it is to achieve that attitude. Ellis' injury seemed to take a lot of confidence and cohesion away from the A's, and maybe everybody's attempts to make up just that tiny amount was part of the team's downfall.

Hey, this season was a blast--from the second and third nights of the season whooping up on the Yankees all the way to destroying the White Sox down the stretch and then going into the Dome of Horrors and showing the Twinkies how to execute.

The A's swept the Twins, and the Twins outplayed the Tigers--let's leave it at that!

Your work for the troops/veterans is truly admirable.

I hope you go to a great baseball town and help somebody win--except when you face the A's! --And I do hope you shun Steinbrenner's ugly money and all the failure it's purchased lately.

Thank you for letting us get so close to what goes on for great athletes like yourself on the bigger stages, and for all of your competitive efforts and achievements in Oaktown.

And look out everybody for the '07 Athletics!!!

--Chris W in Oakland

Barry Thanks for many great years in Oakland and personifying what it means to be an Oakland Athletic. As much as I hope the A's and you can work out a contract the reality is that more than likely won't happen. Thank you and I wish you the best in the rest of your career. If that path takes you away from Oakland then so be it. But for the love of all that is holy please don't sign with the Yankees, Red Sox, or Angels.

It’s sad but true – free agency and trades are a part of the game. It took me a little while to realize that and accept that. I live in New Jersey and grew up a huge Yankee fan during the Mattingly years when they couldn’t buy a trip to the postseason – or at least they didn’t buy one. I suffered through the losing, and it wasn’t until I was in High School that they started winning. It was awesome going to playoff games and learning what stress was all about. I watched some of my favorite players, like Andy Pettitte and Alfonso Soriano leave NY, and I cringed as some of my least favorite names in sports came into town. Unfortunately, that’s just part of the game. It just makes you think twice about what you’re rooting for.

Rather than getting upset over it, I look at players changing teams as a reason to watch more baseball games. Free agency and trades have turned me into more of a fan of the players themselves, rather than a fan of a team. If I was still strictly a Yankee fan, then you probably wouldn’t be my favorite player, I’m sure I wouldn’t wear # 75 on my softball team, and I probably wouldn’t have made the trip to Arizona in March to see you. By the way, thanks for signing – it made my life!!

Becoming a “baseball fan” has opened my eyes to many players that I ordinarily wouldn’t have known much about. Your true fans are going to notice the name on the back of your jersey rather than the name on the front. Anyone who follows you knows that you’re a model athlete – and I don’t just mean you’re hot! You’re so dedicated to becoming the best that you can be, and I know there are SO many teams out there that think you’re the missing piece to their puzzle.

You have a busy winter ahead of you! The East Coast is waiting for you! Will it be Rick Peterson and the Mets, or will it be the real New York team?? Either way, I’ll be watching you!!

JILL

Barry,

Just wanted to thank you for sharing with us. It has been great to read your blog.

The fans rode the roller coaster with the whole team and we are all sad the ride ended the way it did.

The A's all seem like a great group of guys to play and hang with. We love you all! Keep your heads up and don't look back.

Most of all thank you for being you. Your an awesome pitcher and an even better role model. Mr. and Mrs. Zito must be very proud! You will be missed if you must go! Best of luck to you on your next adventure! We will be rooting for ya!

Take care,

The Eacret Family

Pleasanton

Hey Barry!
I'm really competitve in sports, so I know losing is never fun. It may feel terrible at the moment, but as soon as that anger passes, you will be able to reflect on the great season you had this year! Please don't be too hard on yourself, it's such a confidance destroyer! We love you Barry, and I have so much respect for you, not just as a player, but as a person. I just finished reading Moneyball, and now I get more about how the money game works. If you leave, it's going to be really tough, we will miss you so much! If you go, please go to an American League team, so we can see you play in Oakland again! Thank you for being so great to your fans. I hope to see you next year in green and gold!

Megan

If baseball is your first love Barry, then go to St.Louis (if they can afford you). There is no better place to play. The music scene is better than you might think too...blues, jazz, bluegrass, rock n'roll which they appreciate as much as their baseball. Also; you'd be performing for the most knowledgeable and loyal fans around. One thing though; you can't surf down the Ole Mississloppy.

Don't go Barry. How many millions does a man need to be happy? The answer is none. And you'll still get much more than nothing from the A's. Life is about enjoying where you are and who you're with. If somewhere else intrigues you more, best of luck to you. But if you're happy in Oakland, stay! Brad Radke made that decision many years ago and it worked for him in Minnesota. Send a message to the kids that money isn't everything.

I'm really going to miss u Barry in that A's uniform. But as I said before, I'll follow your career. Thank you for everything!!! Your awesome....Love You....Love the A's.........

Well Barry, theres one way that you could get this chance back next year......DON'T LEAVE!

No, I fully understand your situation. I wish in this day and age we could see an athelete that would chose loyalty to a team and fans enough to take less money, but hey, would I do that if I were in your shoes? I'd like to think that I would, but probably not.

This team has evoked an deep emotional connection for me with sports for the first time in quite a while. I've been a sports fan all my life and felt good about other teams, but I mean a real 'feel it in your gut' emotion when I watch you guys play. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for going out there and giving everything you got for all these years. It's been truely exciting! I spend a certain amount of time in the Summer staying in Missouri, and I've been able to see you pitch in (old) Busch Stadium as well as Kaufman Field, and all I can say is if you go anywhere else....please make it KC or St Louis!! I want to see you pitch again!

Much Respect,

Brian

BARRY! I'm not ready to let you go yet. You're my absolute favorite player of all time, and I don't think you should go anywhere but the A's. You've been a HUGE factor on this team, more than people realize, and we need you. Nobody says you HAVE to take more money. I always thought you were the kind of guy who chose his heart over any material things, and I hope your heart is in Oakland. I'm pleading that you come back, even if it means not getting the contract that other teams may offer you. Look at somebody like Tom Brady, who took massive pay cuts so that he could keep his team members and help the organization. I know that you can do the same thing, and I hope to God you do. You've done so much for this young rotation, and you've got so much potential and great years to come I don't want to see it anywhere but Oakland. You're the figurehead of a young, talented, and VERY fun team, and I know you won't get that anywhere else on the same level.

Please Barry. Stay. For the fans. But more importantly, for yourself. This is where you belong. We love you.

Barry, thank you so much for a great season! I am still impressed at how nice you were in Seattle posing for pictures. I have a great one of you and my seven year old daughter, and she calls you her boyfriend! Your'e a true gentleman and a great competitor and I hope your'e career continues to blossom! Thank you again! And please stay at a hometown discount! Please!

Barry, Thank You for being a Great Oakland Athletic. I thank you for representing us with such pride throughout this journey. As everyone else has posted I would love to see you back in the Green and Gold. If it doesn't work out you will always have a fan in me. Have a great off season. Hang Ten!

Please don't leave... please don't. You're the core, Zito... the boys still need you.

Barry,

It is a business, we all know that. But it's also something deeper, something that becomes a part of us, our collective spirit. It doesn't have to be about money, it can be about something bigger- consider seriously staying with A's. You're part of our family, even if you move on to a new city. But think about how close we were this year - we can go all the way, and we surely need you to get there! You're in our hearts always.... Stay an A, Barry!

Megan

Fremont

Hey Barry. Avoiding the obvious of what happened in this last series, all that aside I want to say that this has been my most memorable season watching the A's play.
I tried making it to every game I could go to (without getting in trouble at work =P) and to watch almost every game on TV. The thought that you might be leaving mid-season encouraged me to try and be there for the dreaded "last Zito game with the A's." But fortunately for me, and the fans and the team, we got to see you take the A's into the playoffs. And I think regardless of whether you made it to the World Series or not, we are so grateful that you guys took the team this far... That we were able to enjoy a few more games with cold autumn nights, inflated ticket prices, and $5 hot dogs on Wednesdays instead of $1 =). We love you for it, and although I understand there are many factors that contribute to whether or not you stay in Oakland for at least another season, I wish more that anything that you will stay. You got a lot to teach these young one's still!

My niece was born just a few weeks ago, it'd be nice for her to come to her first A's game next season wearing the cutest A's outfit you've ever seen and seeing you pitch for her first time - how's that for an incentive!!! Ok, I know that was cheesy enough but possibly not enough to keep ya in Green ;).

SO I guess it's best to say that once you've cleared your head and have a chance to fully think what it is to become of next year for you, I'm down to be a Barry Zito fan anyday if not with the A's. We all love you and support you and your true fans are willing to cheer you on where ever you go.... just for the sake of bitterness, if you DO leave us, please don't go to the Tigers!! Lol, ok, have a great time in the off-season, enjoy some football, the holidays, maybe meet some cool people along the way, and I hope you do get a chance to make it to Japan.

Catch ya next season - I hope so much with the A's tho!

Luv, Tania

One of your biggest fans!

Zito-
You are my all time favorite A. Always will be. You didn't need another start to prove to us what you can do, trust me Zito, we all know very well what you are capable of doing. Reading your blog made me cry. Zito I dont think you know how much we all love you and wish for you to come back. I dont think any other color will look as good on you then green and gold =) Zito, YOU ARE AWESOME!!! I will have the biggest crush on you FOREVER!!! Please, I will do anything, stay with the A's...

-Ashley

Barry, Thanks to you and the whole team for a great year.I hold out hope that you will be wearing an A's uniform next season, but in any case, you will always be an A to me.You are a class guy on and off the field, and no matter what uniform you are wearing when you are introduced you will get a loud ovation from me.Best wishes no matter what you may do. Judy

this is a huge tiger fan i think people say bad things about detroit but they are for real this is not the team 2 years ago 119 looses but every thing that leland has done has turned has turn to gold this team had heart and played as one not as an one man superstar face it your big hurt was shut down to a little scrach, he bascially ****** and the others well and further more our pitching well we got fast-rogers-faster-verlander-fastest-zumaya so sorry and good luck next year by the way watch us kick some butt in the world series love always- michigan.the home of the DETROIT TIGERS,WITH HEART

I sure hope there is some way to keep you in Oakland next year! Barry, you are a true class act. What you have done for the A's, MLB, and even US Soldiers....You are unmatched in every aspect! I sure will miss you if you leave, but promise to follow you and cheer for you wherever you go. Thanks for being so great to the Oakland fans!

Hi Barry,

Just wanted to thank you and the team for the memories. And whereever you end up next season, I'll be cheering you on. Here's a pic of you and me from the end of last season: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v22/pureparadise/Ballgame09242005/Picture495crop.jpg

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v22/pureparadise/Ballgame09242005/

Thanks again, and I wish you the best of luck!

Sincerely,

Grace

Seriously Z - it's your call.

I want you to re-read the comments from people like Megan and Ashley (and maybe consider taking her up on that offer) and think about what it would mean to the fans in Oakland if you just stayed super rich instead of super-ultra-mega rich and stayed here. It's not Billy's call, not Scotty's call, it's your call.

You can put green in your wallet and gold in your bank account...or you can put green on your back, and gold in your heart.

Stay an A, Barry. And please fire Boras, I know you, and deep down, I know that you of all people don't want a ******** working for you.

Hey Barry!
Sorry things didn't go your teams way. I was really hoping you guys would pull through and make it to the World Series, maybe next year! I really hope you stay with Oakland! Please don't go to the Yankees! I don't want you turning into a Yankee robot, where they all look, talk, and act alike. I like you the way you seem to be, unique. You seem like a very nice and down to earth guy and I hope you stay that way. If you do however go to another team, go to the Orioles, that way I can go watch you pitch whenever I want! ;) Best of luck to you Zito. Take care :)

Hey Barry -
I don't know how many of these you'll get to read, but I wanted to put something out there for you...

I work at a sporting goods store in the bay area, so I tend to be around a lot of sports fans all day. And today I noticed something really special. After yesterday's game, you'd think a lot of A's fans would be down - a little disappointed or frustrated. But man, that really wasn't the case at all. I saw more people come into the store today wearing green and gold than any other day I've been there - after the clinching the division, during the ALDS and after the round 1 sweep included. I talked to a lot of these people, and everyone seemed to have the same mindset: Could things have gone better? Yeah...but you know what, you guys gave us one **** of a season. From spring training right on into the dog days of october, you guys played the game the way it was meant to be played...and we, as A's fans or just as followers of the game, could not be more proud of you. You faced a lot of stuff before and during this year - both individually and as one of the guys - but every challenge was met head on.

I'm sure you've heard fans say to you before, like "we're with you no matter what" - but sometimes it's hard to really see that play out in real life. Today, for me, was just one way to see that get proven.

So I just wanted you to know that the same Oakland faithful that cheered you on when you came up off the farm will still have your back on the day you're welcomed into Cooperstown - no matter what.

Hey Barry
We live in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, which is 61/2 hrs due north of Minneapolis. We have taken the trip more than a few times to see the Athletics play against Minnesota. We follow every game on tv or on gameday. We also saw you on Letterman a couple of years ago. We were in Minneapolis for the game the next day after that!! You guys played a fantastic season and just want to wish you the best of luck in the future whether in Oakland or wherever you may land. (Hope it is with Oakland) Just know that the Athletics are loved north of the border as well. Sounds like a great bunch of guys.

Have a great off season and we can't wait for the grapefruit league in February.

peace and be safe,

Heather and Ryan in Thunder Bay

Z,
I'm reading what others are saying and I have to agree: DON'T SIGN WITH THE YANKEES!!! Include in that the Mets, Giants, Red Sox, White Sox, Tigers, Angels. However, as a diehard A's fan, if you do decide to leave your LOYAL FANS IN OAKTOWN, sign with the Dodgers or Padres or Cardinals...a REAL A's fan does not root for the cross bay rivals, the Giants!!!

Barry,

I’m sorry that it didn’t go the way we all hope it would. If this is really your last year with the A’s it would have been nice to see you off with a ring.

Regardless how this year ended up, you guys had a great season and made it most memorable. I will never forget being in the stands and watching the 2006 A’s clinch the Twin’s in game 3! It was awesome.

I hope to see you back with the A’s next year but I know I might be hoping for a little too much. SIGH… No matter where you end up, you’ll still be my #1 player! Good Luck.

Julie

Barry,
My husband introduced me to A's baseball 3 years ago and what can I say, I feel in love. There is something very special about this team, and you Barry had a lot to do with it. What you all did as a team is heroic and inspirational. It's inevitable to dissect everything that led up to today, but that is a part of the healing process, its human nature. I commend you Barry for your natural talent, your individuality, and your professionalism. You have represented the Green and Gold with class and dignity. Keeping you in Oakland would be really awesome, but if the outcome does not turn out as I hope I want you to know that I wish you success in your career and happiness in your heart.

Your fan always,

Norma

Barry,

I'm 18 and have been a fan of the team since 98'. So i've followed your career since your first game and I know this game is a business so I know that you'll probably be gone. I just want to say thanks very much for everything you've done for the Oakland A's and us, the fans. No matter what we always knew you were going to give us you're very best win or lose, and thats as much as I or anyone can ask for. You're a great pitcher but more importantly and example to the other 24 in the clubhouse. No matter where you end up (unless your in pinstripes), good luck, god bless, and thanks for everything.

Matt

Mr. Z,
Yeah, the LCS was frustrating as ****, but it was really a great year, the best A's fans have seen for over a decade. And you were a huge part of it. This year and all the years you have been an A have been awesome. You never missed a start, always fun to watch, you got the best curve of all time, and you always gave it your all. I cannot thank you enough. I will be a fan of yours as long as I live. And as funny as it would be to watch you try and bat once in a while, if you gotta leave the A's, please go to an AL team so we'll get to say hi to you in Oakland once in a while. Thanks again Barry. Take care of yourself.

BZ,
Since 1901. 1901... That’s over 100 years of A's baseball. You've earned your way into that history and that's something to be proud of. I hope you can appreciate it like I do as a true A's fan. I have a feeling you won't be going anywhere and usually my feeling is right. Maybe you do want to though... however, just remember the good times had here- the jokes, the cheers, and the ladies in the stands screaming your name. Because in the end you won’t remember how much you got paid or the games you won or lost, you'll remember the relationships built. But if you take one thing with you, please let it be this... that the true A's fans out there who know the line up, who read the box scores in the paper, who watch all the games... they APPRECIATE you. And that's a big deal... we appreciate you for your kindness, words of wisdom, leadership, and sincerity. For your tight pants, curve ball, and facial hair. For your quotes, dreams, aspirations, and loyalty. Last but not least, we appreciate you for being you... your cool, calm, and just badass self. If you do end up going to another team it really will be the end of an era. It's been real, Zito. Until next year... Oakland A's, always.

-Kelly Wombacher

(19 years of true love)

P.S. Ron Wash for Prez. And if you want, you’re always welcome at the University of Montana. Snowboarding in the winter, floating the river in the summer, drinking year round, and the big sky forever.

Mr. Zito,
Like many of the fans that have posted before me I'm a young guy and maybe that prevents me from putting the season in perspective. It felt a lot like '03. Just feeling the team is right there, is ready, is willing, but maybe God wasn't. And it felt the same way it did watching Miggy walk off as it did watching you in the dugout: Needing to win a championship for you guys and just running into the wrong team. And now the blame game starts: Chavvy and Macha and everybody who "let us down" will have to hear it. I don't buy it. Chavvy's a hard worker, a talented player, and an honest man. And Macha has been awesome. He should stay. But all of us are here for you now. You know by now you're one of the favorites around here. My heart rate is double when you pitch and triple when you win: I'm certainly not the only one. So, please, do what's best for you. If you can make the money than please do it. You don't owe us anything, we owe you. Do what's best for you and yours and everything will be fine in Oakland. You're forever a winner, forever a beautiful person, and forever an A to us all.

All the best,

Julian

hey barry,
you had a great year with us and i hope that you stay but either way you'll be an athletic for life! we love you here in oakland and thanks for all you've done for the team over the year. We would have never made it to the ALCS if it weren't for you. I'm talking like you're leaving which i shouldn't because you'll never now what happens with beane. But we love you and hope to see you in the green and gold uniorm.

nAncY

Hey Barry,
Congrats to ur team for winning the AL West and finally getting out of that dreaded first round.

Being a native from San Francisco, I should be cheering for the Giants. That is not the case for me. I have been a partial season ticket holder for the A's seating in the Bleacher section for the past 2 yrs. What the A's have done during this decade has been unbelieveable with the low payroll.

Well, calm/cool Zit, I know you have had a great 7 years with the Athletics organization. I know you will weigh out the options to the best of your ability.

If you go, I know that all of the true A's fans who go to lots of games will definately miss you if you decide to move on.

Thanks for the memories in the green & gold,

Matias

I just want to thank you and the rest of the Athletics for giving us another great season. The team had a bumpy ride with all the injuries and all, but watching you guys pull through the obstacles made it even more exciting to watch. Like everyone else, we are all dissappointed that it had to end this way; but in the end, it was still a very successful season.
Zito, I really hope that you stick with the Green and Gold next year, but regardless of where you end up, you should know that you will always be respected and looked upon in Oakland. Either way I wish you the best of luck Zito, and thanks for pitching your heart out all these years.

Beating Santana was off the chain. Congrats on a great season from a admiring Tiger fan in LA...

Mr. Barry Zito, I love you to death. You and the A's had an amazing year. You guy deserve praises for defeating the doubters. Everyone counted you guys out from Game one. I did not see the entire game 1 you pitched, because I was in class, but I will never forget that game. Nor will forget the 7 amazing years you gave us Oakland fan's. I will follow you were ever you go, just as I do Huddy and Mulder. I pray you decide to return to Oakland, but again Zito, I support your every decision. Thank You Barry Zito, for being a great inspiration in my life.

Zito, we couldn't have asked for a better group of guys to represent Oakland this year. The team proved alot of critics wrong this season. I really enjoyed watching you pitch against Santana, I just knew how important it was to you personally and to your fans. I was there at game 1 against the Tigers. I will never forget that game being it is the first playoff game I had ever been to. The atmosphere was electric. The fans seemed as one and we were all behind the team 100%. I left still feeling confident that day that the A's would pull through. Even though things did not go as we all had hoped I was still proud of the team for making it further than anyone had predicted. Where ever you go I will always be a Zito fan and wear my Oakland A's Zito jersey to the games. Take care and thanks so much for posting blogs. =) Sincerely Mary Garcia, Hayward CA.

Thanks for all the great memories and a great season. You'll be great wherever you go. And you'll be terribly missed.

Hey Zito Take it easy bro don't kick yourself in the *** you are a great player and will hate to see you bounce off, But I learned it's all a part of the game which being a fan it *****!
But lets just say this is on the table I am a hunk man and my wife wouldnt mine if I break you off... if ya know what I am saying babycakes!

Well Good luck bro!

Barry,

This post below said it all for me. So rather than rehashing it in my own words I'm simply reposting it to bump it up. Personally, I hope you keep this one in mind during your off season.

Thanks,

Joco

Mr.

Zito, I'm a die-hard Tigers fan. Have been since the day I was born. You are a great pitcher. It wasn't your fault that you lost the game. You had little to no run support. Two of your biggest hitters (Thomas and Swisher) had a dismal series. The bright spot on your team was Milton Bradley. Take heart, it wasn't your fault. The tigers really seem like the team of Destiny this year, much like the White Sox were last year. Perhaps the next year will be Oakland's turn. They'll need you to be there if they want to be the Destiny Team. Good luck with your off-season. If Oakland decides to get rid of you, I'd love to see you with an Old English D on your jersey!

Barry,
The A's organization & fans were very lucky to have you here all these years. And not just for your excellent pitching but for your mentoring of the upcoming young pitching talents as well. I'm sorry the season ended the way it did, but it does not diminish the wonderful season we've enjoyed. Good luck to you - wherever you play next year, you will always have fans here in Oakland.

Hey Barry,

We were so lucky to have you on this team. It was a pleasure to watch you grow these past six years. Thank you for everything.

I am from Minnesota and the Twins are my team but you've always been my favorite pitcher to watch and the A's have been my second joy in baseball. I always wanted to see you and Johan match up and hats off to you man. That was unreal. I had to hear about it from all my friends and couldn't wear my A's hat until the Twins were swept out but congratulations on a good season and hopefully you're back in the green and gold but if not maybe you'll get a chance to pitch at the dome more often. Peace.

Hey Zito, you can't blame it all on you man. You only lost one game, it's a whole team effort.
Thanks for all the great years you had with the A's, still i'm hoping to see you in the green and gold.

No matter where you end up, I will always support you.

PLEASE, DON'T LET MONEY GO TO YOUR HEAD, YANKEES IS NOT A GOOD TEAM AND YOU KNOW THAT.

I know you're not about the money, so i'm sure you will make a good decision.

Love always, Sasha

Barry we need ya! Stay in the BAY!

Barry I would just like to commend you on a great season overall as a pitcher and as a great team player. You have done so much for this club that the fans of the oakland athletics shure do apreciate. Dont beet yourself up over game one of the ALCS, its baseball it happens. Look at the positives and don't dwell upon the negitives and you will be a much happier person

I'm betting Danny has a seat saved in the dugout for you, and if you stay in Oakland (say YES), we'll always have room for you, too *wink wink*

Enjoy your photo collage, I have another one on the way...

xoxo

Lil

This defeat will only make you stronger.

Love ya,

Andrea

Brooklyn, NY

Barry, keep your head up buddy. If you weren't upset, I'd be worried. You are a great competitor, funny dude, and a fun pitcher to watch.
All my A's hats have a '75' under the bill so your time in Oakland will never be forgotten.

See you at Crogan's

Hey Z-

Thanks so much for the blog during the series, you're the best brother and I hope to see you in Arizona next March wearing the green and gold.

Peace

Mark

ZZZ Great Zito

Thanks to all you guys for a great season, hope to see all you guys next year!!remember you guys beat the Tigers before, so it just wasn't the time YET!!

Thanks, Barry, for the great seasons you've given us. I really hope you'll stay with the A's next year--you'd really be making a HUGE statement by doing that instead of just going where the money is.

Russell

Barry,

Thank you so much for the time you have spent here in Oakland. I have always (and my family) liked you best. You have been the player the A's team has surrounded. Good times and bad, it has been great. You were always a great pitcher and will always be.

I hold out hope that you will be here for years to come - it will break my heart to think you will be in another uniform next time I see you play.

You really seem like a wonderful guy.

I think I read in an article somewhere that you blame yourself for the series - not true. Don't believe that. Don't beat yourself up for that.

Gosh - what more can I say?

Thank you so much - Best of everything to you!

I hope you do another blog sometime - this has been wonderful - you are an excellent writer.

-Deirdre

It was a pleasure watching you this season, Barry. Your game against Santana really was a gem. Please don't leave Oakland, but if you must maybe you could join one of the Chicago teams and I'll come cheer you on here!

Jackie

Barry,
What can I say man? Its been a real joy to watch you for the last several years. You're character and performance on and off the field has set you apart from so many others, and I want you to know that you'll probably never fully understand how much its appreciated. To me you will always represent what it means to wear the white cleats.

I'll say thanks for the memories man but I refuse to say there won't be any more in Oakland. Whatever happens, you'll always be loved and appreciated. You've done the green and gold proud.

Barry,

You are what the Oakland Athletics are all about. Hard working, easy going, fun-loving, and awesome at your profession. I've watched Giambi, Tejada and Damon leave. I, like all fans, questioned the trade of Hudson and Mulder. Your departure leaves the A's without a face. We are truly going to miss you.

PS- You'd look horrible in pinstripes.

Barry, just in case you actually read these, I just want to say that you are a great player and that no matter where you go next year or the years to come after, you will always be an Oakland Athletic at heart and in the hearts of fans. I also want you to know that you are the reason I learned to love baseball again. Even though it all started because I thought you were probably the hottest guy on the planet, I quickly saw that you as well as your teammates had a collective spirit and love for the game that you don't normally see in people past the age of 8. You and your teammates made me see that baseball could be fun again and that win or lose, there is always something to be learned. So thank you Barry, as well as all Oakland Ahtletics, for helping me fall in love with baseball again. I hope with all hopes that you and Billy Beane will make another surprising off-season and figure out a way for you to stay with us to win the World Series next year. By the way I still think you are probably the hottest guy on the planet!

Barry, you are one of the nicest people. Us being the fans just wanna say it was wonderful having you on the team. You have such a wonderful spirit about you. Have a great off season and i sure hope you come back and play for the A's. Thank you so much for all the time you have been here in oakland. yes as everyone has said before you are one of the hottest people i know.

love you.

sophia

We love ya Z!!!!

Best of everything in the future, thanks for a classy 7 years full of memories to last forever.

Namaste!

Hi Barry, what I feel most badly about is that you didn't have a chance to have closure with the fans. When you left the field after your last pitching appearance, you didn't receive your usual standing "O". I don't think most people realized that they may have just witnessed your last game in an A's uniform. That thought has stuck with me ever since. Whether you pitched up to your potential in a game or not, you were the heart of the team. Even at the ripe old age of 28, you are one of the elder statemen, whom the younger guys depend on for support, advice and as role modeling. If you end up in New York, you have a built -in fan base, as my two daughters (you know them)now live there and the rest of our family will see as many games as possible. If this is goodbye, thanks for all the wonderful memories. J. Marr

Thank you Barry for all the memories, and good luck to wherever you go next year! I know you say nobody knows what's going to happen, but A's fans know, and we have accepted it. Wish I could have heard you sing one more song...really enjoyed the live extra innings shows. Hopefully you don't sign w/ the Yankees, and remember you will always be an A to A's fans.

Barry you have given us memories and countless good times while you were on the A's these past seven years. I can't think about you leaving without getting sad (especially since I never got your autograph while you were an Athletic!). But truth be told, I wish you genuine luck and happiness in your future. I hope you never forget how much we love you here in Oakland. Whatever teams you end up with is most certainly lucky.

-Missy

You'll always be an Athletic to us, no matter what happens. Thanks for the ride!

-B in W.C.

Z,

Thanks for everything, and if you do leave, I wouldn't mind seeing you as a Met.

Zito- I'm not sure if you read all these comments or not- but just in case... I wanted to say that I first fell in love with baseball watching you and the A's in '03. I know we all wanted this season to end a little differently, but it was still an amazing season, we made it all the way to the ALCS and I am still proud as ever (if not more so) to be an A's fan. Congratulations on a great season and I hope to see you around next year. But if not, I'll be there decked out in my Zito shirt to welcome you back regardless! You'll always be an Athletic to me. Thanks for six great years!!
-Betty

Barry,

My husband and I were just saying this morning how no matter where you may end up, you will always be associated with the A's and we will always root for you, just as we have rooted for Huddy and Mulder. You have been a joy to watch and as I said once before in a comment, you and the A's gave me a reason to watch baseball. And i am really going through withdrawals right now...........

We love you Barry--

Rebekah

Allright one more blog and you won't hear from this loud mouth tigers fan. All I can say is I am once again impressed as **** by the A's fans here! You are all showing more class and respect than I would have imagined,. Once again, Barry you have some great fans there...I really think you (the A's) and the Yankees ran into a freight train..the Tigers just have that look about them this year. Have a good off season and I'm sure that whether you stay in oakland or go elsewhere you will do well. Best of luck and sorry, I have to say....Gooo Tigers!!!

I hope you stay in Oakland, Barry. You belong with the A's.
Nick

Losing the ALCS is nothing compared to possibly losing you as an Oakland A! I love watching every pitch you make (even on the off days) and seeing the affect you have on the other players around you. Who will design the tie for Barry Zito tie day? The A's just won't be the same if you decide to leave:(... There are still many more happy A's memories left for you to make and green is your color. Stay. Please.

Barry,

You guys played your hardest. I wish you the best of luck wherever you end up. I hope you can stay with the A's.

Jennifer

barry,

i know that the season and in all reality your career as an athletic,is over, i just want to thank you for 7 great years and as a true fan i have come to accept the fact that when the money is available baseball becomes a business rather than a team sport, and the team that sticks together to make each individual player better will never get compensation by keeping the gems that help make them who they are as a whole. good luck wherever you go but once you leave the a's you have lost a fan though the memories are great i wish you well barry zito

green and gold forever wherever

In your rookie year I took my youngest who was 11 years old to the game where you guys had pictures taken with the fans.
We have a picture of you and my son Doug, together that he cherishes even today.

He is now pitching for a JC here in the bay area and is coming off of Ulnar nerve surgery to relieve some pain while throwing.

What I am trying to say is that you have impacted many people in a positive way to game of baseball.

My son has the tools to go far in this game, you gave him the desire.

For that I thank you tremendously.

Good luck in your continuing career.

Al

Hey Barry,
Thanks for a great season and a great 7 years. I really hope you're with us next year - not only can't I imagine you in another uniform, but I can't imagine you in another clubhouse! You're perfect for the A's and I believe vise versa.

I know it's a business and you've got to do what you've got to do, but I do hope the A's make you a decent enough offer that you'll be able to accept perhaps a little less than some other 'deep pockets' team can offer you.

Way back when, you signed a shirt and some rookie cards for me at the bowling alley in Alameda. Wherever you go I will cherish those items and the memory of watching you mature as a pitcher and a person.

If you do go, I sure hope it's not to the Yankees - anywhere else would be better for my true A's fan heart.

Take care,

Andre

Alameda

Barry I'll keep it short and sweet...If Mr. Bean disrespects what you bring to the table with an inadequate offer, do what you gotta do bro. Otherwise, pleeeeeeeeeease stay in Green and Gold. This is a team of history and destiny, and that destiny is tangible with guys like you.

Barry,
I hope that all goes well and you are able to return next year.

Losing a pitcher of your stature would be devastating. You did win 16 this year and should have about 20 or so.

I know that things will work out for you regardless.

I wish you the best and hope to see you in the green next year!

Barry,
I am a huge fan of the A's and you have always been my favorite player on the team. I hope to God you stay in Oakland, but if you can't then I wish you luck wherever you may end up. I will always be a fan of yours. Thanks for the great years in Green and Gold. -Kenneth

fukc man. hate to see the zito vibe leave the A's. i wasnt sure back in the early 2000s if you were the kind of guy (or even pitcher) to lead this team, but you budded and matured into the leader, no question. if you leave, we're left with chavvy, who is still the best 3B, but a little too laid back to lead the laid back, you know? lol.. do what you gotta do--you deserve a great contract--but think about stickin around: these guys are lookin pretty good for next year. Regardless, best of luck bro (unless you somehow end up signing with the Disney Angels of Anaheim, in which case, all this warmth and fondness is negated and void).

Peace,

Matthew Bernard

(something to consider: if you come out to NYC in the offseason and wanna hang with some like minds, shoot me an email)

Barry,
Thank you for a great season. It won't be the same without you. You are a great player and you seem like a great person too! You have been my favorite player since you began. I even got a chance to see you play in the minor leagues before you made your debut in the majors. I know your time has probably come to an end with the A's. My family and I wish that you could stay in Oakland. Thank you for giving my daughter and I a wave after you just arrived in the parking lot as we shouted for you to stay in Oakland on your last home playoff game. We really appreciated the fact that you noticed us. We will miss you. You have been a great team leader for the A's and a great role model. Thank you for the memories and good luck wherever you may go. Don't ever let any team change you. I hope you come back as an Athletic, but if you don't I hope you don't go to the Yankees. It doesn't matter, I will always be a Barry Zito fan.

Good Luck and Thank You Barry!

Tamara

Good job this year! I really wanted you guys to beat the Tigers. Good luck next year!

-Andrea

ps. I think you would be GREAT pitching in Atlanta next year. ;)

Barry -
It breaks my heart to even think that you might not be back with the A's next year. You did a great job in keeping cool even during the toughest innings this season. Your one in a million. I only wish you would stay and beat "Catfish Hunters" 130 winning games. I would love to see you achieve that and so much more. Thank you for a wild season and I hope you will be back. :)

Barry-

It's been a good year. You guys made it so far, and we are all so proud of you! It's so sad to think that you might not be back next year. You'll always be an Oakland Athletic to us! But thank you for a great season, you guys made a lot of fans happy... I really hope to see you back next year. First Hudson... then Mulder... not you too! Well best of luck to you, and I'll always be a Barry Zito fan!! xoxo

Jessica

"You had me at hello," don't go Barry stay here...Your an awesome pitcher, me and my vatos try to throw the ZITO curve ball but we end up hitting each other(keep our day jobs, i know)...anyway it was an awesome year, all my freinds are Gi-Aint fans and of course my A's were better, AGAIN. Barry wherever you go you'll be awesome, I'll root for you just be sure to give all your secrets to next years starting 5. Zito you will be thouroughly missed, more than Tejada, Mulder, Hudson, etc. If possible try to stay, have lunch with Mr.Bean & Mr.Wolf work it out. If you do end up venturing out just keep being ZITO....God Bless

sal

hey...!

(smile). i love you ..and i wish you the best...

(((hugs & kisses)))

Kimberly

Dear Barry,
Hey, a lot's gone on culminating in this particular ending.

I get you, Bra. "...how I didn't apply every lesson I've ever learned from every bad [choice] I've had, and I'm still beating myself up..." A lot's changing in your life and that's when the humble reminders that although the humans have bad [games], it takes entire spans of our lives for embedding lessons learned. Your "processing" parallels mine pretty much recently.

Beating Santana in the Metrodome will only add brighter sparkle to your smile in future All Star Game introductions. I see you as that Hall of Fame pitcher who gets there by enduring times like these past three seasons.

I once promised myself I would not be a fan of anybody except myself after Cleveland lost to Leland's Marlins. In the process of becoming a fan of myself, you played guitar at what I humbly refer to as my singing debut; remember that feeble attempt I made at singing "Flake" during one live "Extra Innings"? So, thank you for that.

This wrap of your seven years with the A's reminds me of a song played in your warm up in a sunny September start: "...bittersweet, surrender...Sweet and bitter, bitter then sweet" ---

All best to you in your off season.

Karen

Hey Barry,

As a Tigers fan I want to congratulate you guys on a great season. Sweeping the Twins is no small feat, especially the momentum they were riding into that series. I never expected the Tigers to sweep you guys. I was at Game 4 of the ALCS, and Haren pitched well enough for you guys to win. But again, congratulations on a great season, and good luck in the offseason.

barry,

over 7 years with the a's you set yourself above "the big 3" you are the a's ace the one guy that the organization held onto when we didnt have to... july 31st 2006 at midnight you were still an athletic wearing green and gold and showing your stuff proud. a bonefied game 1 postseason starter, and one of the faces of an organization that has been waiting for someone to stand up and say.... hey oakland is where i want to be, the city and the organization believed in me and now it is my turn to give back... ive been waiting for that day and i believe that you can be the one to do that for us. sure i miss everyone that has left but after each one i wonder.."what if"... im sure history will repeat and your wallet will be fat but will history repeat on the other hand and see stats drop, fan popularity plummett, and careers diminish... 3 times in 10 years the public "leader" has left oakland and each time we turn to someone else, again it is something that comes with the territory of being an a's fan.. barry zito you do what you need to do i on the other hand will continue backing the team i love praying for the day the dynasty comes or... stays... in oakland..

green and gold forever wherever

You can put green in your wallet and gold in your bank account...or you can put green on your back, and gold in your heart.

the person who posted this could not say it any better. please dont go. please.

Once, just once, it would be refreshing to see a ball player back up all his kind words and gratitude for the fans and his team, by thumbing his nose at extra $$$$millions$$$$, shocking everyone, and signing with the team he loves for less money. Man, the guy would be a hero to baseball fans worldwide!!!

Z-
We love you too. Hey here's an idea:Tell Steinbrenner where he can put his money and give Mr. Wolff an A-mazing hometown discount. You're a California boy at heart. Just ask A-Rod and Jason how fun playing in NY is. Remember, money can't buy happiness, but regardless of your decision, I'd like to offer my wholehearted thanks.

P.S.--When I say you'd be better off in Ca., that does not mean you should go play for the Angels

Barry,

Thank you for everything. You are truely and inspiration to all of the young boys out there who are just wanting to play ball. You are compasionate and are one of the few left who play because they love the game, not for the money. I have been an A's fan for as long as long as I can remember, and I have seen many of my favorite players leave. I really hope that you are not one of them. I know that you have to do what is right for you, but just remember that we all love you and want you to stay. After all, when all young boys learn the game, they aren't thinking about money, they are developing a love for the game. I know that feeling is still inside of you. Thank you for wearing the green and yellow with pride, and giving us great baseball memories.

Thanks for all the great memories of this season!!! I will have my fingers and toes crossed that we have more to come next season!!!! PLEASE Don't go!!!!!

Barry,
Thank you for all your hardwork, your dedication, for being so level-headed and just for being yourself. Whatever the future holds for you, be it still here in Oakland like so many of us would like, or somewhere else, go knowing that you are appreciated here and are still very much admired not only as a baseball player, but as a person. Wishing you nothing but the best for your future! =)

Barry,
It seems that most of us understand that there really isn't a chance that the A's are going to offer you more money than anywhere else. But money can't buy you fans like A's fans. We're not the type to boo and degrade our own (even after they leave with the exception of a select few). None of us want you to leave but in today's world, there isn't much any of us can say to convince you that this is where you belong. That is left for you to decide.

Unfortunately, there are certain teams that would cause many of us great agony and anger to see you join solely for the money (hint: two are located in the most populous city in the U.S.). Hopefully you won't disappoint us by going to the highest bidder (of course unless it's the A's). Thanks for the memories and like everyone else, I hope to see you in gold and green next season.

Cheers,

Mandy

A's fan for life

Hi Barry,
What can I say that hasn't already been said by your other adoring fans? Congrats on another fine season...the A's couldn't have done it without you. You're awesome! On a more desperate note, PLEAAAASSSEEE don't leave Oakland. While making your decision this off-season, please consider what it might be like to leave not only the greatest fans in baseball, but the BEST place to live and thrive in the entire nation--the Bay Area, of course. Face it, Barry, Oakland is where you belong. Please follow your heart and soul back to where you started. Please don't join the rest of the $$$ hounds. Many thanks again for pitching your heart out for the Swingin' A's this season. Love you always.

P.S.--It saddens me to fathom the notion that my two-year-old and four-year-old daughters might not ever have the opportunity to experience the Zito Magic firsthand.

It took me a few days to recover. I believed till the end. The A's still had a great season and it was amazing for us fans to watch, especially the wins against the Twins.

When it comes time for you to decide, I know you need to do whats best for you and your family. Your fans would love it if you stay, but we'll love you wherever you go. You are a great athlete, pitcher and a good role model for our children. We need more of you.

If you end up going somewhere else, I know the fans there will love you. But I doubt that it would be the same as you fans here. We've watched you develop into the great baseball player and good person you are today and we

are behind you whether you have a good day or not.

Stop beating yourself up and do focus on the great highlights you mentioned.

Always remember how important it and how good it feels to give back to your community, especially when life has been good to you. And never forget the Bay Area.

I hope you have felt the love, especially in these comments.

All the best to you always.

You don't have to prove anything to anyone. Just, "Release and Enjoy."- Ghandi said that was the key to life. Go enjoy it!

I made it to the game on the 14th. It isn't easy to make it many A's games living in Ohio but having been a fan since the A's beat the Tigers in the ALCS in '72 I had to make it up there. I was hoping to get to go to game 5 and see some hitters made to look foolish on that big curve.

You have earned anything you get but would love to see you stay. I always go back to when Smoltz took less money to stay with the Braves a few years back and how he made the comment, "$25 million, $30 million, once you get to that point the money doesn't matter." Who had more fun this season, you or Tejada?

Hopefully the A's can make an offer that is at least reasonable (even though that appears to be a stretch). The union clearly doesn't like to see players sign for less money on a home team discount but you've got to do what is right for you.

Hey A's fans!!!! So who is it that we want to replace Macha? I personally wouldn't mind giving Washington a try. Has an A's winning attitude already!!! Maybe he's what we need to get over the hump. And what about Dusty or Girardi? Come on A's fans we got about 7 days that we can still communicate. BTW, I'm the one rooting for the Raiders to go 0-16. If THEY don't want to be good... then by golly be REALLY REALLY BAD!!! Does anyother OAKLAND FAN FEEL THE SAME WAY.
Come on let's still talk on their dime!!

Hey jmendez033, I agree about Washington! I have to say though, I stay away from NFL in general, but I am a huge CAL fan when it comes to football. I also am a huge San Jose Sharks fan, they actually win most of their games! For right now, lets root for our fellow american league team, Detroit, after yesterdays game, I think they will need all of the support they can get! GO A's!
Megan

soccermeg828, Thanks for responding. Hopefully more A's fans are still in "THE GAME". I,too, will root for the Tigers. As a team that gets eliminated, you always want THAT team to win the championship. I also pay SOME attention to the Sharks. They have been doing very well the past years, but haven't even checked on them this year.
The Raiders seem like they really want to win one today. If so, good for them!!! To be the WORST TEAM IN NFL HISTORY is really not a good thing, I love the A's and I love the Raiders!!!!! Show me something!!!!!!!!! Get the number 1 pick. Don't trade it awaw. THEN GET BRADY QUINN or an ather TOP RATED quarterback!!!! Once again, thanks soccermeg. BTW, Ilove soccer too!

Barry...I love watching the A's, and I especially love watching you pitch for the A's.You're not only a great player...you're a great person and you rep the bay well. You work hard, and you can tell it just by your warm up.You dont warm up to throw, you throw to warm up...haha if that makes sense. I'm from the bay, I go to school out east...California is awesome and I count the days til I go back, especially the bay. No place like it. I play out here, an hour out of NYC, so its not like I get to come home for all the holidays. This cold weather out here gets old...ya know...and Iunno...the people just aren't the same ya know. But yea...I just hope you don't go...it just wouldn't be the same...hopefully I'll get to go to the games with my friends this summer and still see ya pitch for Oakland.I love the A's!But anyways...best of luck.

Hey Barry,

Listen man, you should definately go to the Mets this year. Think about it. We have a very potent offense, and a great bullpen, which will make it easier for you to get some wins. Also, there will be no more DH, which could do wonders to your numbers. Theres also your good friend Rick Peterson there, who could help you get back to your old form in which you were amazing. You can ask any Met or Yankee, theres no better place to win in New York. We have a very promising future, with stars like Jose Reyes and David Wright, and we have some great young arms. Mike Pelfrey, Phillip Humber, John Maine, and Oliver Perez to name a few. Also, Willie Randolph, whos a great manager to play for, by the way, shows confidence in all of his pitchers, so that will not be an issue. Now I know you might be a little intimidated by the New York spotlight, and the fans, but while Yankee fans may boo just about anyone even when they're having a good season (See Alex Rodriguez) Met fans would only boo somebody when they're doing bad. But if you play to your potentail, you will be wildly popular. The National League is obviously pathetic compared to the American League, and we are clearly the best team in the National League. With our great offense, awesome bullpen, the help of Rick Peterson and the National League, the big dimensions at Shea, and with the support of the fans, imagine the numbers you could put up with us. 20+ wins, under 3.00 ERA, 200+ strikeouts. You will also be able to work with a future hall of famer, and fellow southpaw, Tom Glavine. Imagine what he can teach you. You could also teach some of the young arms I mentioned earlier.

Bottom line, theres one place you want to be next year, and that is the Big Apple with orange and blue. With your help, we will again be the class of the National League. We will bring you back to the playoffs, and we will bring you to the World Series. So come on down to New York.

THE TEAM, THE TIME, THE METS!

Barry, You're awesome! Don't stress over anything. Just chill out and do some yoga or Taiji.

and

Barry, thank you for telling us (the Fans--your fans) that you love us back! It means A LOT for us to hear that directly from you! Have a pleasant journey. And please keep blogging!

from Oakland/Providence

.

BTW, the major reason why I think the A's lost was because of Bud Selig. He wants a "feel good story" and the Tigers is the best team to give that to baseball fans and non-baseball fans.

Remember when we lost to the Red Sox a few years ago in the playoffs? We all know **** well that we would have won those games if Bud wasn't there making those calls. Who knows we could have won the World Series that year.

Anyway, I can go on and explain "why" but I'm sure most fans (I hope) knows the background story. I can't wait for Bud to leave, maybe then we'll be able to a World Series title. Peace and take care.

Barry-
I've enjoyed reading all of your posts. The A's vs. Tigers series was the hardest for me. I've been an A's fan for a short amount of time because of my uncle being Adam Piatt's high school coach. With me watching Adam, I fell in love with your pitching, especially your curveball. However, with me living in Michigan I've been a lifelong Tiger's fan. They haven't given me too many good years in my lifetime so I was definatly excited that they had such a good year. All my friends gave me a hard time about who I was rooting for, but it was not a hard choice to say that I was rooting for the Tigers, but wanted it to be a great series and wanted you to play well. I only wish that they played more A's games televised here in MI. I don't think I've really seen them play since Adam got me tickets to go to Detroit to watch him in his last year with the A's. Take care and I'm anxious to see where ya end up for next year.

Barry-
Thanks so much for your effort and attitude, love of the game, and killer personality :] I loved watching you pitch and I loved watching the A's give it their all, win or lose. I fell in love with baseball and I fell in love with you. Please stay with the A's! I wanted the A's to win and I've never seen you pitch in person, but when I do, I hope it's in a green and gold uniform! Well best of luck where ever you chose to go, I'll always be a Zito fan! Good luck and take care

Stay happy :]

Barry,
This is Mike Ortiz, from our UCSB surfing days. Just wanted to congratulate you on your big deal with the giants. Hope you're still surfing. Scored perfect 10ft Rincon on Tuesday...Hope all is well...

Best Regards,

Mike

I know you ain't gonna hear this but I think you should. I am shocked in your decision on going to the giants? Is there hard feelings toward the east bay fans?
I am personally upset you should have stayed with Oakland bu least you will be a back seat player to Bonds pompous ***.

Well at least Oakland got one good year out of you back in 02

Hey bra lets face it man you ain't worth that much and in your soul you dig what I am saying. I hex you on having a good year and I promise The fans of Frisco will not see the 02 you and the Umps will not call your Uncle Charlie but hey you got your money and ran. You are a pure chump Barry.

Barry, All this talk about your dependabilty and durabilty apparently has left your recent interviewers thinking you were born this way.WHAT ? Do they not do any research before they open thier mouths? Do they not listen to past interviews? I almost banged my head on the steering wheel when I heard Dave Flemings say that to you, say, not ask, that you were born with a gift.If its fustrating to me I can only guess at how challening it is to you.Hang in there! With every interview and silly questions like that look at it like getting it out of the way. DONE ! Maybe then they'll move on to real questions like where did you get your work ethic from, your integrity. Thanks for the invite to AT&T park, I'm still waiting for the tickets. Have you sent them out yet? 2 would be great but 1 will do. For "smiles on the plane"? Congrats on the raise! Some say its to much I say supply and demand buddy supply and demand.

Barry,
I am so sad that you will no longer play for the A's. I guess that most people don't try to stick with one team for their career. I know that the Giants offered you a whole buttload of money, far more than the A's could ever afford to offer, but I am still sad that you went to the Giants. I will always be your fan! Maybe one day I will be rich enough to fly out to SF from South Carolina to see you play! That would be awesome! Keep up the hard work and I look forward to seeing what you do in the '07 season!

Best of luck to you!

Eleanor
